The White Olive Tree – Episode 8 Recap: Li Zhan and Song Ran’s Love Deepens

Li Zhan & Song Ran's bond grows amidst city chaos; rebels use kids as shields. #LoveInWar

Pei Xiaonan went to fetch some wine, leaving Song Ran bored, so she started watching cartoons on her phone. Li Zhan arrived at that moment, but Song Ran, not realizing it was him, thought it was Pei Xiaonan and told her not to let anyone know she was watching cartoons. Li Zhan sat beside Song Ran, joking with her. Having had too much to drink, Song Ran eventually lay down and fell asleep. Li Zhan escorted her back to the dormitory where Pei Xiaonan was also asleep. Benjamin came by, saw both girls were drunk and asleep, and left disappointed.

The next morning, Song Ran was woken by the sound of training in the camp. Noticing the time on her phone, she started packing to leave, but Li Zhan appeared, knowing about her schedule for the day. Surprised, Song Ran asked how he knew; Li Zhan explained that she had mentioned it the night before while drunk. Song Ran, now concerned about what she might have revealed, especially her secrets, went with Li Zhan to the hotel for an interview. In the elevator, which required a jump at each floor to move, Song Ran, not knowing this, instinctively grabbed Li Zhan, which led to an awkward moment.

Sarin introduced Song Ran to his colleagues, where they met Mike, a well-respected figure in the industry whom Song Ran admired. She tried to greet him, but Mike ignored her. Sarin gave Song Ran a bulletproof vest. Song Ran had previously made a famous documentary about musicians in danger zones, which caught Mike’s attention, but he seemed to hold a prejudice against her, speaking harshly. Song Ran argued back. Suddenly, gunfire erupted outside; rebel forces were attacking civilians, making the whole city dangerous. Song Ran overheard someone scalping tickets due to the city’s perilous situation, with many wanting to flee. She saw civilians begging for cheaper tickets, but the scalper was indifferent. Song Ran tried to borrow money from her colleagues to help buy tickets, but Mike thought her action would have little impact.

Amidst her busy work, Song Ran was writing an article when she heard gunfire outside. Worried about Li Zhan, she learned he was with Jiang Lin, fighting rebels, and was now in bomb disposal gear. During the intense combat, rebels used children as shields, preventing anyone from shooting, but Benjamin took the opportunity to shoot a rebel, saving a child he had previously helped at the camp. However, the child was rigged with explosives. Li Zhan tried to disarm the bombs, and Song Ran, overwhelmed with concern, ran into the combat zone. Just as the bomb was about to explode, Song Ran shouted Li Zhan’s name. Li Zhan was knocked back by the blast’s shockwave but was not severely injured, much to Song Ran’s relief and joy.
