The White Olive Tree – Episode 1 Recap: Song Ran Falls in Love with Li Zan at First Sight

Song Ran faces danger as a journalist in Dongguo, bonds with Li Zan after a landmine rescue, but struggles with family and professional challenges.

Song Ran arrives in Dongguo as a journalist, where she experiences an unforgettable period. On the day she is about to leave, she feels reluctant to go. Leina brings Song Ran some tea and snacks, and her son returns with photos, making her very happy. She asks Song Ran to help take a photo for her son. Suddenly, Song Ran is shocked to see an explosion in the distance.

Song Ran heads to the rooftop to prepare for a live broadcast. She receives a call from her station, informing her that the cameraman is stuck in traffic and won’t be able to make it, so she will have to handle the live broadcast alone. Just as the explosion occurs, Song Ran is injured by the shockwave. Despite her injury, she immediately starts the live broadcast to report the situation. Her superiors are impressed with her performance, but her team leader is dismissive, believing that this is just the basic duty of a journalist. If she couldn’t handle it, she shouldn’t be in the profession.

While riding her bike, Song Ran doesn’t hear Li Zan calling for her to stop and accidentally steps on a landmine. Li Zan approaches, and Song Ran pleads for his help. Li Zan reassures her, promising that he won’t let her get blown up. After inspecting the landmine, Li Zan comforts Song Ran. His companion mentions that there is one main mine and four sub-mines nearby, and Song Ran accuses Li Zan of lying to her. Li Zan clears the soil, revealing the mine, with only 8 minutes left on the timer. Song Ran urges Li Zan to leave, not wanting to drag him down with her, but Li Zan reassures her.

Li Zan asks Song Ran how far she can run in 5 seconds. Song Ran says she doesn’t know, as she has never run like that before. Li Zan tells her that today is her chance and that he will try to delay the explosion by 5 seconds, allowing her to run as far as she can. As the countdown ends, Song Ran runs for her life, and the mine explodes. Li Zan shields her, and fortunately, neither of them is injured. Li Zan’s companion arrives and comments that this should have been handled by the military, as Li Zan is just a volunteer deminer.

Song Ran notices that Li Zan speaks Chinese, and his companion explains that he is a Dongguo native of Chinese descent who spent some time in China as a child. Song Ran is scheduled to fly back to China at 3 PM, but the road ahead is blocked. Li Zan suggests that she head to the industrial park in the western suburbs, where there is a repatriation center. Li Zan and his team offer to take her there. As Song Ran gets into the car, she realizes that Li Zan’s bracelet has accidentally gotten caught on her backpack. She tries to call him back, but the car has already started moving.

When Song Ran arrives at her father’s house, her father praises her for her excellent reporting, saying that she is truly his daughter. He asks what her mother has said about it, but Song Ran replies that her mother hasn’t said anything. Her father is displeased, feeling that her mother doesn’t believe he can raise their daughter well. Her stepmother tells her father to stop talking, and Song Ran, seeing the happy family of three, excuses herself, saying she has other matters to attend to and won’t be staying for dinner.

Song Ran asks many people for help but can’t find any information about the volunteer. A friend suggests that the person might not be Chinese but of Chinese descent. Her team leader knows some people in international organizations, so Song Ran decides to ask him for help. Meanwhile, water leaks from the upstairs renovation, and the workers come to Song Ran for assistance. She asks them to take a look, admitting she doesn’t know much about it and will follow their advice. One of the workers remarks that sometimes, the harder you look for something, the harder it is to find, but when you stop looking, it comes to you.

Song Ran approaches her team leader for help, and he gives her a business card, suggesting she contact the person on it. Song Ran then goes to see Luo Zhan, who tells her that there are many volunteers, and he doesn’t know all of them.
