While chatting with her father, Chen Kaiqing uses the pretense of throwing out trash to get his old toothbrush. She secretly keeps it for DNA analysis. Meanwhile, the imprisoned Mai Zhihong is instructed to cooperate in reenacting the murders in detail. Chen Kaiqing’s father, back home, nervously works on his computer, seemingly hiding something.
Mai Zhihong meticulously reenacts each murder with the police, using mannequins to represent the victims. During the reenactment, the sniper, Mang Biao, infiltrates the crowd. Yang Guangyao, observing from a car, notices him and alerts Chen Kaiqing and the others.
Chaos erupts as Mang Biao and other criminals open fire on the police. Chen Kaiqing and her team, while escorting Mai Zhihong, take cover amidst the hail of bullets. Even the usually fearless Mai Zhihong is terrified. Yang Guangyao, positioned near a car, tries to move Mai Zhihong to safety. In the process, Yang Guangyao shields Mai Zhihong from danger and gets shot, ending up hospitalized.
Despite his injuries, Yang Guangyao continues to work on the case from his hospital bed. Zhang Tianming urges him to rest, but Yang Guangyao insists on pursuing the truth. With other suspects dead, Mai Zhihong is the only link to the mastermind, and Yang Guangyao believes protecting him is crucial to solving the case.
Yang Guangyao reminisces about his wife while holding her necklace. Liu Weitao visits and informs him that his heroic act of saving Mai Zhihong has attracted media attention. Superintendent Ma wants to visit him for a press opportunity. Yang Guangyao reluctantly agrees to an interview, where he cooperates with the reporters and even insists on Superintendent Ma taking center stage in the photos.
After recovering, Yang Guangyao actively participates in the Hong Kong police’s ongoing crime scene reconstructions. He also visits Mai Zhihong in the hospital. Mai Zhihong questions why Yang Guangyao risked his life to save him. Instead of answering directly, Yang Guangyao brings up the topic of Mai Zhihong’s kind tutor.
Yang Guangyao shows Mai Zhihong an old newspaper article, suggesting it contains a crucial error. He implies that Mai Zhihong is deliberately misleading the police, including fabricating the scar. He questions why Mai Zhihong would go to such lengths only to end up in jail. Mai Zhihong remains indifferent, pointing out that Yang Guangyao saved him to keep him alive and find the truth. Yang Guangyao admits this is true, seeing a reflection of himself in Mai Zhihong.
Meanwhile, Zhang Tianming and Chen Kaiqing monitor Mang Biao’s movements. They capture a conversation between him and Ms. Zhuang Xiaohua in a car and begin investigating her. They discover she was once an ordinary real estate agent but has recently built a cosmetics empire. They suspect she might be involved in the acquisition of Jingshun Building.
Mai Zhihong experiences another mental breakdown. His imaginary friend, Little Bao, mentions the tutor and suggests that Mai Zhihong is becoming weak.
Chen Kaiqing returns home after work and discusses Mai Zhihong’s case with her father. Dr. Zhou shares his insights and warns her to be careful. In the hospital, Mai Zhihong has a disturbing nightmare and wakes up in a cold sweat. Seeing the handcuffs, he realizes the reality of his situation. Learning that Yang Guangyao visited him, he requests another meeting.
