Moonlight Mystique – Episode 40 Recap/Review

Bai Shuo ascends to godhood, uniting the clans and defeating Mo Li, but at great personal loss. Fan Yue returns in a heartfelt reunion.

At Cold Spring Palace, Mo Li demands that Bai Shuo marry him, claiming that even though she is not Xing Yue, her face alone is enough for him to complete the wedding left unfinished 60,000 years ago. Reluctantly, Bai Shuo agrees, but only under the condition that Mo Li never harms another living being again. Mo Li agrees and declares the wedding will take place the next day at Yueyin Sea.

Meanwhile, Tian Huo remains at Haoyue Palace, reflecting on the sacrifices made along the way: Mu Jiu gave her life for the future of the fox clan, Zang Shan atoned for old grudges with his life, Fan Yue damaged himself to protect the Extreme Domain, and Bai Shuo willingly walks into danger to protect the world. Tian Huo, unbeknownst to Fan Yue, uses the power of the Hua clan’s bloodline to repair the Sword of the Other King, sacrificing herself in the process and dying in Fan Yue’s arms.

The Wedding at Yueyin Sea

Mo Li recreates Yueyin Sea to stage the wedding and even prepares the wedding dress Xing Yue wore 60,000 years ago. Bai Shuo mocks his arrogance, stating he will never understand true love or sincerity, no matter how much divine power he possesses. Mo Li dismisses her words, warning her not to resist unnecessarily.

During the wedding ceremony, just as the vows are being exchanged, Bai Shuo suddenly attacks. She uses the power of the Purple Moon to strike Mo Li, leaving him shocked. Unbeknownst to Mo Li, Bai Shuo had renewed her divine pact with Fan Yue before arriving at Cold Spring Palace, granting her the ability to wield the Purple Moon’s power despite the risk of backlash from combining immortal and demon forces.

Love vs. Obsession

Enraged, Mo Li accuses Bai Shuo of discarding him for 60,000 years without a hint of care. Bai Shuo counters, explaining that love is not about possession but about sacrifice. She declares that Mo Li’s actions have always been selfish, rooted in his desires rather than genuine love.

As Bai Shuo struggles against the backlash of her powers, Fan Yue arrives with Xing Yue’s divine bow. He reveals that Tian Huo had sacrificed herself to restore the bow by merging with its essence. Mo Li is shocked to learn that Fu Ling, the spirit of the bow, was allowed to fall in love with Zhong Zhao, calling it a cruel twist of fate. He battles Bai Shuo and Fan Yue with overwhelming strength.

Zhong Zhao’s Final Sacrifice

Despite their combined efforts, Bai Shuo and Fan Yue are no match for Mo Li. Inside his consciousness, Zhong Zhao self-destructs, using the last of his immortal energy to briefly incapacitate Mo Li and buy time for Bai Shuo and Fan Yue. Before his sacrifice, Zhong Zhao bids farewell, admitting that he clung to life in hopes of reuniting with Fu Ling. However, with her gone, he has no reason to live and chooses to deliver a fatal blow to Mo Li.

Zhong Zhao’s sacrifice gravely injures Mo Li, allowing Bai Shuo to fire a fatal arrow from Xing Yue’s divine bow. Mo Li’s body disintegrates, but the malevolent essence of Yin Xin remains, threatening the Eastern Lands. To contain it, Fan Yue offers himself as a vessel, urging Bai Shuo to shoot the bow one last time.

Torn with grief, Bai Shuo fires the arrow imbued with the sixth sentiment—sacrificial love—shattering both Yin Xin and Fan Yue. Fan Yue dissolves into the heavens, leaving Bai Shuo devastated.

Bai Shuo’s Ascension

With Yin Zun defeated, the clans unite in harmony, abandoning their pursuit of fame and glory to protect the mortal realm. Bai Shuo ascends to godhood, becoming the Goddess Bai Shuo, revered and respected by all. The Eastern Lands return to peace, and Bai Shuo visits her father Bai Xun’s grave, speaking with his lingering spirit. He encourages her to keep moving forward.

A Bittersweet Reunion

Suddenly, Bai Shuo’s divine mark glows, and she is transported to Yueyin Sea. There, she learns from Sun Guan, the incarnation of the Heavenly Dao, that her journey and the events surrounding her were part of a grand design. The Heavenly Dao reveals that it cannot directly interfere in worldly matters, which is why Bai Shuo was chosen to oppose Mo Li.

Bai Shuo’s actions prove that even the Heavenly Dao can err, as she, a mortal, became an exception to its rigid laws. Sun Guan assures her that those who sacrificed themselves for the greater good will return in another form.

As Sun Guan fades away, Fan Yue suddenly reappears at Yueyin Sea, running toward Bai Shuo. The two embrace and share a sweet kiss, reunited under the starlit sky, fulfilling the love they thought was lost forever.
