Back in middle school, a single outburst by Xiu Ya in the school’s broadcast room completely opened Shi Ye’s eyes to the world of “roasting.” Ever since, whenever Shi Ye encountered bizarre clients in his later jobs, he couldn’t help dishing out witty comebacks right to their faces. Later on, he discovered stand-up comedy and made up his mind to quit his old job and go full-time into comedy. Not long ago, Shi Ye got a call from Zhang Peng, who mentioned Wu Xiu Ya’s name. That’s why Shi Ye accepted that particular gig, leading to all that followed. Watching Wu Xiu Ya gradually rediscover herself and shine onstage, Shi Ye decides to confess his feelings to her, feelings that first sprouted back in their middle school days. But just as he’s about to make his move, Cao Zhiyong announces something, interrupting his attempt.
Cao Zhiyong says that Xiu Ya has a chance to perform at “The Alpaca.” The Alpaca is an open-mic show founded by Cheng Cheng. It’s essentially an event for industry insiders to test their mettle, held only about a dozen times a year. The audience is composed of people deeply familiar with stand-up comedy. Over time, The Alpaca has become known as the highest standard of open-mic performance. Being invited to perform there means that Xiu Ya’s strength is not to be underestimated. Word spreads to various clubs, and many doubt that a young woman like Xiu Ya can deliver top-quality stand-up. Xiu Ya herself feels the pressure, thinking all her prepared jokes are terrible. Xiao Lan tries to comfort and encourage her. Although Xiao Lan’s words aren’t particularly profound, they do help a bit.
Xiu Ya works hard on her set, even jotting down notes while eating. The chairman notices this and is impressed by her dedication. He orders his subordinates to give more opportunities to young people in the newly formed Brand Promotion Department. Shi Ye, who has received many confessions before but has never confessed himself, wants to tell Xiu Ya how he feels but can’t find the words. Xiao Lan learns from Zhao Na that Shi Ye is currently single and decides to pursue him, asking Xiu Ya for advice. Suddenly, Xiu Ya realizes what Shi Ye’s earlier hesitation meant. Yet, because Xiao Lan is her good friend who’s set on chasing Shi Ye, Xiu Ya can’t say anything. That day, a heavy rainstorm hits Shanghai. Xiu Ya, not seeing the group’s messages, rushes through the rain to “Bang He,” only to find it closed for the day. Before leaving, Liang Dong notices a man entering the club.
Liang Dong recalls that he took the only umbrella in the shop and worries that Xiu Ya might be stranded without one. He calls her but gets no answer, then calls the club and again gets no response, growing concerned. Xiao Lan mentions in the group chat that Xiu Ya hasn’t come home yet and can’t be reached by phone. Cao Zhiyong, seeing Liang Dong’s messages, wants to go check on the bar but can’t leave his wife’s side. When Shi Ye sees the messages, he sets out immediately. Midway, his car breaks down. Worried sick about Xiu Ya’s safety, Shi Ye braves the storm on foot, heading toward “Bang He.” Inside the club, the lone guest who entered had come specifically to listen to stand-up. Xiu Ya has new material and decides to perform it just for this one audience member. By the time Shi Ye arrives, he witnesses Xiu Ya dazzling onstage, becoming the brightest scenery in his eyes.
The guest leaves with Shi Ye’s raincoat. Shi Ye stays behind to help Xiu Ya clean up. Suddenly, the power goes out. Shi Ye takes out the treasured liquor from Cao Zhiyong’s stash, and they share a drink. Afterward, they discover water is seeping into the club, and they quickly pile sandbags at the door. A fish somehow slips in with the incoming water, startling them both. Their frightened reactions amuse them, and they end up laughing together. In that moment of eye contact, something ambiguous and thrilling begins to grow. They’re on the verge of a kiss when a phone call interrupts, but this time that spark of attraction ripples through Xiu Ya’s heart. After Shi Ye escorts her home, Xiu Ya notices Xiao Lan asleep on the sofa and feels a twinge of guilt.
