Later, I Laughed Episode 12 Recap: The CEO’s Hotpot Date

Xu Yunfeng’s grand gestures impress Xiuya, but workplace tension and unexpected reunions add drama to this transformative episode.

Xu Yunfeng’s date with Wu Xiuya sparks inspiration for her stand-up comedy. Xu Yunfeng introduces Xiuya to places she’s never experienced before—not just anywhere ordinary, but high-end business clubs. On their date, Xiuya dresses in a casual outfit she finds comfortable, only to discover that Xu Yunfeng is taking her to a high-level business event. She jokingly remarks that even the waitstaff are more formally dressed than she is. Publicly, Xu Yunfeng doesn’t shy away from introducing Xiuya as the woman he’s pursuing. Curious, attendees ask about Xiuya’s profession. She honestly responds that she works at Zhonghe Group as an ordinary employee in the internal communications department. Xu Yunfeng immediately adds that she’s a talented stand-up comedian, expressing strong admiration for her abilities.

During the event, Xu Yunfeng seemingly spills something on his clothes and steps away to change in his car. Xiuya, left alone, overhears some attendees criticizing her taste in fashion. When Xu Yunfeng returns in simple casual attire, Xiuya feels reassured that he genuinely respects her.

At the company, the chairman notices that Xiuya is missing from the summit group photo on the official account. When he casually asks his assistant about it, the assistant relays that Hu Jianjun claimed Xiuya requested the removal, supposedly to avoid awkwardness with Zheng Hao. The assistant also mentions that Hu stated Xiuya refused to participate in similar events in the future. This misinformation causes the chairman to feel disappointed in Xiuya.

Hu Jianjun takes things further by publicly scolding Xiuya in front of colleagues, harshly criticizing her writing and demanding revisions.

After work, Xiuya plans to meet Xu Yunfeng for dinner, but her favorite Chongqing hotpot restaurant has closed. Xu Yunfeng surprises her by flying them to Chongqing to eat authentic hotpot. Xiuya cancels her comedy performance for the night and calls Xiao Lan to inform her. Xiao Lan seeks Shi Ye’s help to cover for Xiuya, but upon learning of Xiuya’s trip with Xu Yunfeng, Shi Ye feels a pang of disappointment.

Xu Yunfeng combines their trip with business, meeting with a factory owner, Huang, to discuss an acquisition. Learning this, Xiuya feels less guilty about the extravagant outing. While waiting, Xiuya overhears Xu Yunfeng’s heated negotiation with Huang and becomes curious about the situation. Xu Yunfeng later calmly explains the context, which eases her concerns and earns her understanding.

Returning home late that night, Xiuya finds Xiao Lan waiting up, eager to know if anything romantic happened between her and Xu Yunfeng. Xiuya jokes that the outing felt more like attending a business lecture but admits she learned valuable lessons about workplace strategies. Xu Yunfeng, for his part, listens intently as Xiuya explains her creative process for stand-up comedy, clearly enjoying the conversation.

At the comedy club, regulars Jia Zong and Ma Tiantian watch Xiuya’s performance. Xiao Lan overhears Ma casually suggesting that Xiuya deserves a more prestigious venue. Seeing an opportunity, Xiao Lan approaches Jia to discuss potential gigs. Reluctantly, Jia exchanges WeChat contacts with Xiao Lan.

Xiao Lan and Liang Dong later visit Jia Zong at Stane Manor to finalize details for a show. Sensing Jia’s hesitation, Xiao Lan cleverly jokes that Xiuya’s schedule might soon become unpredictable—especially if Xu Yunfeng suddenly takes her to America for a surprise wedding. The mention of Xu Yunfeng quickly changes Jia’s attitude. He agrees to let Xiuya and Shi Ye perform as the opening act for the Shanghai Indoor Symphony Orchestra’s seasonal concert.

Unexpectedly, Shi Ye declines the opportunity for reasons unknown, leaving Liang Dong to partner with Xiuya instead. Xiuya opens the concert with a 10-minute set that wins resounding applause. As she steps off the stage, she spots two familiar faces in the audience—her company’s chairman and her ex-boyfriend, Zheng Hao.
