Zong Fang disguises himself as an old man, carrying a suitcase and getting into a rickshaw to leave. Milan points a gun at Ke Jingping and orders him to open the safe. Yun Hongshen arrives just in time and tells Milan to put down her gun, but she declares that she came today with no intention of leaving alive. Ke Jingping urges Yun Hongshen to shoot, even ordering him to do so, insisting he won’t reveal the codebook. Milan, determined to obtain the codebook at any cost, argues with Ke Jingping. Suddenly, Zhu He appears and shoots Milan multiple times, killing her. Before dying, she gazes at Ke Jingping with tears in her eyes.
Yun Hongshen looks at Milan’s body and notices the orchid brooch that Yun Hongqi had given her lying nearby. Ke Jingping furiously berates Zhu He and his men for their incompetence in letting Milan infiltrate the building, fearing that the codebook could have been destroyed. He questions why Yun Hongshen returned instead of going to the bank. Yun Hongshen explains that he felt something was amiss and suspected a deliberate plot to target the codebook, as the intelligent Ling Han wouldn’t have left anything behind after death.
Just then, the phone rings. As Zhu He moves to answer it, Ke Jingping stops him and answers the call himself, learning that Wen Yeming has been injured.
Meanwhile, Gong Chuchang investigates Xu Zhaodi’s shop and finds gunpowder on some clothes. He inquires about the identity of the person living there, and Xu Zhaodi’s father-in-law mentions a new worker who replaced the previous one he had fired for theft. Gong Chuchang takes him to the military command to provide a description of the new worker. They create a portrait and identify the man, but he is already dead. During Zhu He’s interrogation of Xu Zhaodi, she dies before revealing Zong Fang’s whereabouts. It turns out that Zong Fang had poisoned her earlier.
Outside the hospital where Wen Yeming is undergoing surgery, Yun Hongshen reflects on the mission’s failure with Milan dead and Wen Yeming injured. He realizes that Kun Wu is a formidable opponent, devoid of emotion, even capable of harming Wen Yeming after living with him for over a decade. Just as Yun Hongshen is lost in thought, Wen Yeming emerges from surgery, and Ke Jingping immediately returns to the military command. Yun Hongshen suggests moving Wen Yeming to a safer location for recovery, but Wen Yeming questions the safety of their current location and asks what is happening.
Yun Hongshen reveals Kun Wu’s family in Japan, highlighting the conflict with Ling Han’s affection for Wen Yeming. Wen Yeming argues this proves Ling Han isn’t Kun Wu and begins to suspect someone else, but struggles to voice her thoughts. Yun Hongshen confirms that he knows Ling Han isn’t Japanese, and Wen Yeming deduces that Yang Ziming told him. The realization dawns on her: Ke Jingping is Kun Wu. She is also now aware of Yun Hongshen’s communist affiliation. Yun Hongshen comforts Wen Yeming before leaving to meet with Ke Jingping.
Ke Jingping inquires about Zong Fang’s whereabouts, and Yun Hongshen admits having no leads. Ke Jingping advises him to deduce the answers. As Ke Jingping speaks, Yun Hongshen desperately wishes the information from the organization was wrong and that Ke Jingping truly was Wen Yeming’s brother. However, he knows this is likely impossible and that Ke Jingping is indeed Kun Wu. Yun Hongshen realizes that Ke Jingping is pushing him to find Kun Wu and feed false intelligence to the military. He vows to prevent this.
Ke Jingping assigns Yun Hongshen to work with Gong Chuchang to capture Zong Fang. Yun Hongshen deliberately delays the investigation, arousing Gong Chuchang’s suspicion. Gong Chuchang begins to monitor Yun Hongshen, leaving him unsure how to transmit the intelligence.
