Chasing the Wind – Episode 18 Recap/Review

Nie Chi faces injury, family pressure, and an uncertain future, while Wei Wei steps toward independence. Will love triumph over challenges?

Wei Wei, thinking about her grandmother’s passing, only hopes to live a safe and peaceful life. She busies herself weaving grass ropes, dreaming of the day she wins a championship. These thoughts cause her to reflect deeply. Her emotions are more stable now, and she no longer wants her grandmother to feel uneasy because of her. In the morning, Wei Wei happily calls out to Lin Ge, announcing that she is ready to resume training. Lin Ge originally intended to train together with her.

Wei Wei, however, says she wants to tidy up her surroundings before heading to training. She assures Lin Ge that she can now take care of herself. When Wei Wei sees Coach Li Haifeng, she explains her decision to stop living with Lin Ge. She wants to try being independent, as it’s unfair to keep relying on Lin Ge to take care of her. “No one is obligated to take care of me,” she says.

Coach Li Haifeng points out that whether Wei Wei is covering for Lin Ge or Lin Ge is covering for Wei Wei, there’s no room for solo efforts. He advises her to call home. Seeing her mother during the video call gives Wei Wei renewed energy, though she only smiles without saying much.

As everyone prepares for a competition, Nie Chi injures his leg due to a mistake during the event. Lin Ge, deeply worried, wants to visit him, but the coach sternly orders her to stay on the field and focus on her responsibilities. Li Haifeng reminds Lin Ge to prioritize professional athlete conduct. After her match, Lin Ge learns that Nie Chi has been sent to the hospital for treatment and then transferred to Beijing. Her worry grows as she sends him messages, but none receive a reply. Helpless, she visits Coach Li Haifeng’s room, where she overhears that Nie Chi’s condition is uncertain and recovery could take a long time.

Fang Chao stays by Lin Ge’s side, trying to comfort her, but she is too anxious to eat. However, a message on her phone suddenly cheers her up, and Fang Chao guesses that Nie Chi must have texted her.

Meanwhile, Gao Kai visits Nie Chi with an arrogant demeanor, seemingly intending to provoke him. Nie Chi finds Gao Kai’s attitude insufferable. Gao Kai insists the team needs someone like Nie Chi. Fang Chao also visits Nie Chi and notices Gao Kai’s presence, surprised that the team captain would check on a teammate. Nie Chi remarks that Gao Kai is sneaky and timid, always behaving suspiciously.

Lin Ge occasionally wonders if Nie Chi’s injury is her fault. Nie Chi, overhearing the doctor saying they need to discuss his condition privately with his mother, insists they speak in his presence. He is devastated to learn he might not be able to compete again. Refusing to heed his mother’s advice, Nie Chi resists the idea of studying abroad. Lin Ge feels uneasy but decides to focus on her own competition before looking for Nie Chi.

Nie Chi secretly practices on his own and gets caught by the doctor, who suggests intensive rehabilitation if he hopes to rejoin the competition soon. Hearing the doctor’s warning—that failure to recover means he cannot return to the ice rink—devastates Nie Chi, who considers this outcome his worst-case scenario. His parents encourage him to pursue studies abroad, believing it is a better path.

Lin Ge notices Nie Chi researching IELTS and TOEFL, suspecting he might be planning to leave the country. She feels conflicted and confronts Nie Chi’s mother, learning that his family is pressuring him to study abroad to secure a good degree and eventually take over the family business. His parents, concerned about his safety and their age, want him to avoid further risks.

Lin Ge realizes how complicated their future is. She reflects on how relationships are often burdened by family expectations and circumstances. To be together, she believes, they must overcome countless obstacles.
