Chasing the Wind – Episode 16 Recap/Review

Lin Ge faces accusations, Weiwei grieves a loss, and Gao Kai struggles to heal. Tensions rise, but camaraderie shines through.

Fang Chao’s father notices that the whole neighborhood is buzzing about the new Olympic champion; everyone is checking in at local spots to commemorate the achievement. He’s overjoyed and wants to join them for a group photo, only to find out people believe Lin Ge won the gold medal by intentionally hurting Weiwei—and, as a result, Lin Ge is now on the receiving end of harsh criticism.

Sensing something amiss, Fang Chao’s father hurries back home. Worried that Lin Ge might be hurt by all this negativity, Nie Chi initially feels concerned. Upon seeing that Lin Ge isn’t rattled at all, Nie Chi is relieved. Just as Lin Ge is about to eat, she receives a call from her mentor and shīniang (mentor’s wife), who both express concern. Lin Ge reassures them she’s fine, firmly believing that as long as she trusts in herself, no one can bring her down.

Returning to the dorm, Lin Ge discovers Weiwei continually apologizing for everything. Lin Ge tells her she doesn’t take it personally and that such situations are quite normal. Lin Ge doesn’t think Weiwei bears her any ill will.

Meanwhile, Gao Kai suffers a minor foot injury. At the hospital, Li Haifeng scolds his athlete in front of the doctor, forbidding him from appearing on variety shows. Gao Kai assumes the coach is angry with him, but on the way back, he realizes Li Haifeng was actually helping him by indirectly refusing media requests—thus saving him from a big hassle. Before leaving, Li Haifeng instructs Gao Kai to post a few pictures of his injury on Weibo, remarking that if an athlete can produce good results, a little publicity only makes things better. Gao Kai can’t help but think Coach Li is an “old fox,” but he follows the suggestion, causing a huge stir online.

Weiwei cries in the dorm. Everyone is asking about her injured foot, but Weiwei remains tight-lipped, barely saying a word. Their older teammates are furious because they think Weiwei is faking an ankle injury to gain sympathy online; Lin Ge, however, believes Weiwei isn’t that kind of person. Sitting on her bed in distress, Weiwei looks very upset. When Zhu Zhu returns, acting aloof while packing her things, she notices her former partner is treating Lin Ge very kindly and becomes annoyed. In truth, Zhu Zhu deeply resents Lin Ge, believing Lin Ge is at least half the reason she herself left the team.

Gao Kai feels uneasy about Nie Chi’s concern for him. After Nie Chi leaves, Gao Kai secretly stands up, only to discover he can’t stand fully upright. Fang Chao, called over by another senior teammate, comes to help push Gao Kai’s wheelchair. Seeing his partner laughing at him, Gao Kai gets irritated. But because of his injured foot, there’s little he can do when he’s shoved against a bench. Gao Kai sees that his name is missing from the results list and loses the indifference he used to have, realizing that for an athlete, both the high point and the finish line can come and go quickly.

Fang Chao, feeling the pressure, goes to the medical room to get his wound checked. He’s worried he can’t mentally or physically bounce back. When he learns the medical staff knows Coach Li, he’s afraid they’ll report it to him. During a press interview, Weiwei defends Lin Ge. Lin Ge also explains to everyone that she and Weiwei only have a healthy competitive relationship—there are even some areas in which Lin Ge isn’t as strong as Weiwei. Their mutual humility leads people to rethink any conspiracy theories between them.

Suddenly, news arrives that Weiwei is under extreme emotional stress because her maternal grandmother has passed away. As a result, Weiwei’s emotions have been running high. Everyone takes turns keeping her company, only to discover she has developed a fever. Lin Ge patiently stays with Weiwei, helping her cope. Weiwei feels safe when Lin Ge is around, though her gaze remains fixed on the window. Lin Ge goes to the coach, puzzled why the coach is withholding this information from Weiwei herself.
