Chasing the Wind – Episode 14 Recap/Review

Nie Chi and Lin Ge reconcile through training and misunderstandings, forging deeper bonds despite adversity

Li Haifeng believes that athletes should be kept in a closed environment and train with single-minded focus. Only when they win a gold medal at competitions will they be taken seriously; it’s definitely not through any kind of team publicity that they become famous. Because of this, he is very strict about them using cell phones and strongly disapproves of romantic relationships within the team. However, his superiors don’t see it that way. They believe that the world is a colorful place and that athletes especially should not be blocked off from it. Moreover, as a coach, Li Haifeng shouldn’t cover their eyes and prevent them from observing the outside world.

Li Haifeng feels it’s wrong for athletes—who receive the highest national support and funding—to go out and “play” like this. Yet this view is criticized by his superiors as “ridiculous.” He can’t figure out what he has gotten wrong. Meanwhile, Gao Kai hopes everyone will participate in an upcoming competition, but lately Nie Chi has been in a bad mood and hasn’t been paying attention. Unexpectedly, upon hearing that Lin Ge might return, Nie Chi becomes stirred.

Fang Chao was initially delighted that he managed to row his way to second place, thinking he might receive praise from the coach. Unexpectedly, Li Haifeng directly pointed out that Fang Chao’s performance this time did not actually represent his true level, but rather came from someone else’s guidance. At this point, Fang Chao’s roommate mentions that the advice came from Nie Chi, causing Fang Chao to freeze.

Nie Chi and Fang Chao meet alone. Fang Chao immediately makes it clear that anyone can help him, except Nie Chi. Then he leaves coldly. Nie Chi truly wants to reconcile with his good friend, but it seems the two have drifted further apart because of Lin Ge. Lin Ge initially thought she would play a leading role in this competition, but to her surprise, the coach wants her to act as cover for Weiwei shijie (Senior Weiwei). Although Lin Ge can’t help but feel disappointed, she still believes that a competition is a competition and that she must take it seriously.

Nie Chi tells Lin Ge that while winning the competition is important, it’s not as important as it seems. He also says that, although his own position is quite low, one can still succeed through hard work and perseverance. Seeing Lin Ge so nervous, Fang Chao tells her to relax so that she can better handle an upcoming interview. Nie Chi goes on to win an Olympic gold medal and, during his interview, openly expresses gratitude to the person who encouraged him—looking deeply at Lin Ge in the audience.

Nie Chi and He Weiwei are then pulled aside by reporters to take some photos together. Watching from the sidelines, Lin Ge feels very uncomfortable, thinking that she and Nie Chi are separated by a great distance and that Weiwei seems a much better match for him. When Lin Ge wakes up, she notices that her boyfriend and Weiwei look like a golden couple, which triggers gossip in the dorm. While everyone believes that Nie Chi is with Lin Ge, Lin Ge herself feels that her own position is very low and that she doesn’t deserve him.

From beginning to end, Nie Chi maintains that there’s nothing going on—that he’s innocent, he likes Lin Ge, and there’s no special relationship with Weiwei. Lin Ge, however, thinks she is not capable of standing alongside someone she likes—she feels she doesn’t have the ability or the platform to do so, and thus believes that there can’t possibly be any outcome for them. Nie Chi, on the other hand, candidly tells Lin Ge that because it’s her, the future is impossible to predict; Lin Ge will definitely achieve an even bigger stage. Gao Kai and the others secretly peek from the sidelines and, upon seeing the two reconcile, they can’t help gossiping about it.

Later, when Gao Kai tries to ask Nie Chi about something, he discovers Nie Chi quietly handing a strategy over to Fang Chao and wanting to let Fang Chao think it came from him (Nie Chi). Nie Chi and Lin Ge return to the provincial team, and everyone notices that something seems different between the two of them. Just when they want to ask Lin Ge about it, she shyly runs off. Lin Ge tells Coach Han that she has never met anyone as impressive as Weiwei, and that she genuinely admires Weiwei’s gold medal win from the bottom of her heart. Fang…
