Chasing the Wind – Episode 1 Recap/Review

Lin Ge Takes Care of Nie Chi

Chasing the Wind - Episode 1

Lin Ge (played by Jiang Zhenyu) has been practicing short-track speed skating since she was a child. Her skills have reached a high level, allowing her to participate in prestigious competitions. However, during one of the races, she unexpectedly falls. For the first time, Lin Ge experiences a mistake and sees short-track speed skating from a completely different perspective.

Lin Ge recalls that her motivation for pursuing short-track speed skating has always been money. Despite investing significant effort and passion into the sport, her focus was on the prize money. Yet, she realizes she genuinely loves this career.

To support Nie Chi in short-track speed skating, Lin Ge competes but ends up falling alongside him. Growing up, Lin Ge struggled with low self-esteem due to her mother’s death. Her relatives wrongly believed she hid her mother’s inheritance, treating her with disdain. Nie Chi notices her unhappiness and asks why she hasn’t returned home. His casual question strikes a nerve, as Lin Ge is terrified of going back—she doesn’t feel she has a home anymore.

Understanding Lin Ge’s determination to pursue short-track speed skating, Nie Chi persuades his coach to allow her to join the sports school for training. The coach, impressed by her endurance during a skating session, agrees to take her under his wing. With Nie Chi’s encouragement, Lin Ge officially begins her training, even receiving a pair of skates from Fang Chao.

Later, Nie Chi moves to Beijing, leaving Lin Ge feeling deeply disappointed. Although he didn’t want to leave, his father’s decision forced him to go. Meanwhile, Lin Ge finds a supportive coach who shows genuine care for her. One night, Lin Ge cries quietly as memories of her mother overwhelm her, unaware that the coach’s wife sees her sorrow from the shadows.

Despite her struggles, Lin Ge practices relentlessly. On the coach’s wife’s birthday, Lin Ge and her teammates decide to celebrate with a small cake. Though modest, the gesture brings immense joy. Fang Chao and Lin Ge spend more time together, becoming close friends.

During practice, Lin Ge notices a boy skating at an incredible speed and her competitive spirit kicks in. To her surprise, Nie Chi returns, and she’s overjoyed to see him again, promising to “look out for him.” Their lighthearted moment is interrupted by Fang Chao, who startles them.

When Lin Ge learns Nie Chi plans to stay in a storage room, she’s upset and immediately grabs cleaning supplies to tidy it up. Nie Chi is touched by her gesture, and together they clean the space. Meanwhile, Fang Chao overhears his father discussing an upcoming match against the provincial team and starts feeling nervous, considering skipping the 2,000 yuan entry fee to save his family money.

Lin Ge, also tight on funds, hesitates when her coach mentions that results will come in two weeks. She decides to think it over.

At dinner, Lin Ge announces her intention to join the Jiangnan team but assures everyone she’ll visit often. Nie Chi, however, senses she doesn’t truly want to leave but keeps quiet in the crowded setting.
