Cao Xuanxuan’s Love Journey – Episode 15 Recap: When Something’s Out of the Ordinary, There Must Be Something Strange

Mysterious murders, cryptic clues, and a suspicious confession plunge everyone into deeper intrigue at the Zhai residence.

Sun Weiyan and He Chuner bring back an old gentleman versed in the Book of Changes. Everyone takes him to where the leg was found. Following his calculations, they locate Master Zhai’s head; by following the clues he provides, they finally assemble all parts of the corpse. Just as they are about to examine it, the people of the Zhai family suddenly all go off together (causing great sorrow). Only one young woman remains standing there expressionless, which strikes Guo Zijie and the others as odd. After this woman calls the fortune teller away, Guo Zijie and his group secretly follow them to listen in. It turns out the woman, named Ouyang Mingyue, is the granddaughter of someone they call “Grandfather.” She says her family’s fortunes have been poor and she wants to rely on gambling to improve her luck. Planning to go to the gambling den that night, she asks the fortune teller to see how her luck will be. After checking, the fortune teller declares that her luck today will be great, but also foresees possible bloodshed in the residence. He says Master Zhai will not be the only one who dies there—someone else will die as well.

That night, Guo Zijie and Sun Weiyan head to the gambling house to see if Ouyang Mingyue really wins any money; indeed, she does. Meanwhile, Cao Xuanxuan and He Chengren go to the Zhai residence to investigate. The Zhai family’s young lady accuses Cao Xuanxuan of stealing something, until the butler appears to ease the tension. Having witnessed Ouyang Mingyue’s actual winnings, Guo Zijie and Sun Weiyan believe the fortune teller’s predictions are accurate. Since he also mentioned something might happen at the Zhai residence that night, they hurry over to warn Cao Xuanxuan out of concern.

Initially, Cao Xuanxuan doesn’t believe any of it, but suddenly hears someone scream. Everyone rushes over and discovers Ouyang Mingyue injured. A hidden weapon is found on the ground, but Ouyang Mingyue did not see the attacker—she only recalls a Taiji symbol on the assailant’s clothing. Hearing the mention of a Taiji symbol, the butler concludes it must be the work of the Dragon-Tiger Hermit, Master Zhai’s sworn brother. But Cao Xuanxuan thinks that, with everyone currently on guard against the Dragon-Tiger Hermit, it doesn’t make sense for him to strike now. Early the next morning, as everyone is having breakfast, a maid comes in happily. Questioned by Cao Xuanxuan, the maid says the young lady’s jade pendant has been found.

Sun Weiyan and He Chuner go to the Taoist temple in search of the Dragon-Tiger Hermit, only to find it empty. In his room, however, they discover a drawing depicting dismemberment and a Taiji-Bagua diagram related to the case. Sun Weiyan concludes the killer must be hiding there. Just then, the Hermit appears and locks them in a room. As they look for an exit, he unleashes poison gas inside, knocking them unconscious; he then enters and takes Sun Weiyan’s fan. Elsewhere, Guo Zijie and Zhou Shaoliang disagree while discussing the case. Because Sun Weiyan and Chuner haven’t returned, Cao Xuanxuan grows worried. At that moment, Zhou Shaoliang’s guard Long He arrives with Sun Weiyan’s fan. Seeing this, Guo Zijie and Cao Xuanxuan are anxious to go searching, but as it’s a dark, moonless night, it’s hard to conduct a search. Zhou Shaoliang, skilled at finding people, steps up to handle it.

Zhou Shaoliang leads his guards to the temple. By then, He Chuner and Sun Weiyan have woken up, though Sun Weiyan is feverish and weak. To warm him, He Chuner removes her own clothing to cover him. When that’s not enough, she hugs him. Right as their feelings start to blossom, Zhou Shaoliang bursts in, and together they seize the Dragon-Tiger Hermit. He does not deny anything and freely admits to the killings. His easy confession strikes Cao Xuanxuan and Guo Zijie as suspicious, and Zhou Shaoliang also thinks he’s not the real killer. Cao Xuanxuan asks He Chuner to keep investigating; she’s come up with a plan to keep an eye on the Zhai residence. She also takes the chance to share her own sad childhood story with He Chuner. The Dragon-Tiger Hermit is locked up in the county’s death row cells. Ouyang Mingyue and the Zhai family’s young lady pay him a visit there.
