Back for You Episode 2 Recap: Ale Completes His Undercover Mission

Ale's mission ends, but desk job awaits. Luna's tale inspires, yet tragedy strikes. Case solved, but at what cost?

Ale’s undercover mission comes to an end, and Supervisor Zhang fulfills Officer Huang’s promise by restoring Ale’s status as a police officer. However, he’s assigned to work in the archives, a desk job he’s not keen on but must accept. Luna remains in a coma, and Ale learns from the doctors that talking about past events might help wake her. Not knowing her personally, Ale starts reading from the books Luna brought with her. He picks one at random titled “Luna’s Story,” unsure if it’s about her but intrigued enough to continue.

In this story, Luna is a character in the writer Bullet’s book. She appears before Bullet because she’s dissatisfied with how he’s written her. During a wedding ceremony in a church with her fiancé, gangsters disrupt the event, and they manage to eliminate the threats. Just as the groom places the ring on Luna’s finger at the church door, he points a gun at her. Luna destroys Bullet’s manuscript, demanding a rewrite for a happy wedding.

Luna continues to inspire Bullet’s writing, leading him to create a successful novel where Luna has a tragic backstory; she’s an orphan adopted at seven for government benefits, treated poorly by her foster parents, and later sent to an orphanage. She kills a client there, drawing the attention of a killer organization, and becomes an assassin herself, desiring a happy life. With Luna’s guidance, Bullet writes a compelling story, becoming a bestselling author, with Luna living happily by his side. However, Bullet’s ambitions grow; he seeks new success as other writers rise, but without Luna’s help, he can’t create quality work. When he asks for her help again, Luna realizes he’s just using her and disappears.

Bullet falls into despair, turning to opium to write but to no avail, facing criticism and accusations that “Luna’s Story” isn’t his work. Luna reappears in his life out of love, unable to watch him deteriorate. Bullet proposes in the church, fooling Luna into thinking he loves her, asking her to use her real name, Zhang Baobao. After the ring is on her finger, he reveals his true intentions—wanting her to help him write again. Realizing she’s still being used, Luna refuses, and in anger, Bullet shoots her.

This story leads Ale to recall a missing person case involving Zhang Baobao, reported by the writer Mu Xuefeng. The narrative is eerily similar. Ale speculates that Zhang Baobao might be dead, her body possibly in the church mentioned repeatedly in the story. He reports back, and Aga, leading the investigation, finds Zhang Baobao’s body in the church. Mu Xuefeng is brought in for questioning, where it’s revealed his story mirrors Luna’s; he used Zhang Baobao for his writing but didn’t want their relationship public. When she confronted him, she fell down the stairs in an argument, and he hid her body in the church.

The case is solved, with Supervisor Zhang pleased with Ale and Aga’s teamwork. Ale returns to the hospital, but when he looks at the books again, they’re all blank.
