The Way Home – Episode 13 Recap/Review

Sibling bonds deepen as Jiahao and Jiashu start afresh, but family conflicts and external disputes cast shadows over their new beginning.

Chen Long’an received a call from He Jiashu saying he was moving out today. Surprised, Chen Long’an asked why he was in such a rush. Meanwhile, He Jiahao woke up, went downstairs, and found no one around. He called out a few times, but there was no response. Soon after, Chen Junli and Chen Ruonan arrived to see Jiahao. Junli handed Jiahao two heavy bags, explaining that Jiahao’s mother had asked him to deliver them. Jiahao, struggling with the weight, asked what was inside. Junli replied that Jiahao’s mother practically wanted to move the entire house over and that she had already instructed him to make another trip tomorrow.

Junli then pulled a few books out of his backpack, teasing Jiahao for not taking his schoolbooks with him, wondering how he planned to study. Ruonan jokingly said Junli was afraid Jiahao would surpass him academically. Junli responded that he welcomed fair competition. While they were chatting, Jiashu returned and told Jiahao to pack up as they were moving.

Jiashu took Jiahao to their newly rented home at Uncle Cai’s place. Uncle Cai gave them a few instructions before leaving. Jiahao and Jiashu carried their belongings inside, unpacked, and settled into their rooms.

Back at the He household, He Hongguang, He Hongjuan, and Jiahao’s mother Lihua were having breakfast. Lihua poured herself a cup of tea, and Hongguang looked at her expectantly, hinting that he wanted some tea too. Instead, Lihua handed him the teapot and told him to pour it himself.

Hongguang, puzzled, asked what he had done to upset her so early in the morning. Hongjuan remarked sarcastically about how calm he seemed despite the family’s recent turmoil, as if nothing had happened. She added that perhaps being a businessman made him cold-hearted. Lihua snapped, asking if Hongguang planned to just abandon his son and let him fend for himself outside. Hongguang retorted that Jiahao was 18 years old and old enough to take care of himself.

Hongjuan chimed in with mock agreement, sarcastically listing all of Jiahao’s issues: a little illness, some discomfort, emotional struggles, pressure, and depression—but nothing serious, surely nothing that required parents to constantly look after him. Hongguang realized her pointed words were meant to provoke him, but before he could respond, Lihua took away the tea he was about to drink. She told him that since he was old enough to take care of himself, he could make his own tea too. Frustrated, Hongguang blamed Hongjuan for stirring things up, while Hongjuan insisted she was just stating facts. She criticized Hongguang for being stubborn like a mule and for his hypocritical behavior. Their bickering continued as she took away the rest of his tea.

Meanwhile, Jiahao was getting ready for school. Jiashu asked if he needed a ride, but Jiahao declined and asked for some money instead. He explained that the school had requested medical fees, but he forgot to inform their father. When Jiashu asked how much he needed, Jiahao said 100 yuan and then added that he also wanted to buy new shoes. Jiashu handed over his wallet and told Jiahao to take what he needed. After Jiahao left, Jiashu checked the wallet and found only one bill remaining. He smiled helplessly.

Later, as Hongguang was preparing to leave the house, someone informed him that Chen Decai was causing trouble again at the village committee regarding the Dragon Boat Festival. Chen Decai argued that the He family was no longer suitable to host the event and that the opportunity should go to another family. Although the village chief tried to mediate, Decai continued to make a scene. When Hongguang arrived, he surprisingly agreed with Decai, admitting he wasn’t in the right mindset to handle such matters at the moment. After saying this, he left. One of Decai’s companions questioned whether his actions were too harsh, but Decai insisted he was justified.

After school, as Jiahao was about to leave, Chen Afu invited him to join some friends for a meal. The group gathered near the school gate, where Jiashu was waiting for Jiahao. The two of them headed home together, stopping along the way to buy fruits and vegetables. Back at their new place, Jiahao introduced Jiashu to their friends as his older brother.
